The SWS Youth Group has begun! Here are the requirements to join:
1- 11 years and up
2- Able to perform projects without continuous assistance
3- Want to be there!!

Why did we start a SWS Youth group? After performing so much humanitarian work for 4 1/2 years, we've noticed that the little children who were there from the beginning are now bigger. Really big! They are also very competent and proficient at completing all the projects that they work on. We realized that they needed more. They are always helping and serving the little people at our normal projects and this is very powerful and helpful but they want to fly. So, we're giving them the chance to fly and have time to finish their projects quickly and efficiently without having to stop. Let's see what these kids can do!

This group will meet one hour earlier than the normal project. If they would like to sew, they will be required to bring their own sewing machine. Some project ideas that we have are: sewing a quilt, baby blankets, baby burp rags, baby slings, diapers, hat looms, wooden toy blocks, bead geckos and piece quilting. The sky is the limit!

Remember that quality is more important than quantity!

Wash 2- 36"x45" pieces of flannel fabric
Pin right sides together
With a 5/8" stitch, Sew right sides together (pulling pins out as you go), leaving an 8" opening.
Clip corners. Pull right side out.
Sew 8" opening.
Iron nicely
Mark center spot at the 18" x 24" quadrant (more like 17 1/2"x 23 1/2")
Sew a big "X", about 18" long at the center to reinforce stability
Bind edges and your done!
You could also embellish the edges or even crochet the edges for a personal touch!

In preparation for the December Christmas project, we are collecting items to make the Mommy, Baby, Girl and Boy kits. Items needed are: size 2 disposable diapers, deodorant, razors, soap, bobby pins, ponytail holders, chap stick, lotion and baby wipes.

School Bag Pattern

Remember that Quality is more important than quantity!

Items needed:

Heavy to middle weight fabric, strong and non-shrink. 14" x 36" for body and 2-26" x 3" for handles
Needle 14 or 18
Velcro 3" x 1", no stick on velcro
Normal thread
Safety pin

Cut One piece of fabric 14" x 36" and fold in half to a 14" x 18", right sides together. Seam 1/4 " allowance using surge OR zig-zag on sides and bottom leaving the top open. OR Cute 2 pieces of fabric that measure 14" x 18". Place them right sides together. Sew three sides using a 1/4" seam allowance then surge or zig-zag the three sides, leaving top open.
Thurn the open top 1/4" to the wrong side of the fabric to finish the edge. Next, turn this 1/4" finished edge 1 1/2" to the wrong side of the fabric to make a hem for the bag opening. Sew the hem.
Cut two handles that measure 3 1/2" x 24". There are two ways to finish these handles. The first method is to fold them right sides together, lengthswise and sew and 1/4" seam lengthwise. Turn the handles right side out (use safety pin to help pull it through) and serge or zig-zag the ends.
Place one end of a handle 3" from the side seam and aligned with the hem.
Sew an "X" at handle ends on bag top (about 1" tall). Repeat for other 3 handle ends.
Sew a 3" length of 1" wide velcro centered on the insides of the bag and hem.

FINISHED!

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

THERE IS SO MUCH YOU CAN DO!

At Serving With Smiles, one of our mission statement goals is to teach and inspire children to be LEADERS. We have slowly but surely figured out and realized that the best way for the children of SWS to gain leadership experience is by......coming! After a while, the kids grow and learn and want to teach the young and new kids how each project works. It is so amazing to see these children actually grow up with SWS and gain a love for serving and THEN pass it on to others who want to serve also! So cool!
The SWS American Fork branch has started a youth group for kids ages 11 and up. Our first meeting will be September 10, 2011 in the Relief Society Room from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. If you would like to sew please bring your own sewing machine.
Parents are appreciated as directors and we can always use help!
If you would like your child to become a SWS group leader, just come and once they have learned how things work, they can sign up on the group leader sheet under a director, put on a badge and be a leader!
SCHOLARSHIIP OPPORTUNITIES....When these group leaders are ready for college or job applications, we are happy to write letters of recommendations for group leaders who have assisted in the projects. We consider a youth who has served as a group leader for at least 6 projects, qualified to receive a letter of recommnedation. Contact Elizabeth elizabeth@servingwithsmiles.com for more info.
SCHOOL AND CHURCH. Acting as a group leader can earn you awards, recommendations and qualifications in your school and church aspirations.
EAGLE PROJECTS!! Providing opportunities for boys to earn their Eagle Scout Awards has been a wonderful addition to our SWS projects! It's definately a win-win situation! Some ideas for earning your eagle award with us are: 1 - Fundraise for humanitarian kit supplies and bring supplies to a scheduled SWS project. THEN you will be in charge of setting up, conducting, completing kit boxes, inventory and deliver of supplies to our inventory storage. 2- Collect money to purchase humanitarian kit supplies then host a service project on your own with family and friends. Then donate to Serving With Smiles with a tag inside each bag stating "Made by ________ from _______". If you like, we will ask you to speak to the children of SWS about your experience and feelings about service. 3 - Make items such as quilts, blankets, school bags, baby booties, hat looms, etc. and donate to Serving With Smiles. 4 - Come up with your own idea and let's see if it will work! Jake had high aspirations that we weren't sure could actually be achieved, but he did it! He organized the fundraising and assembly of .....our very favorite, 100 newborn kits!! Wow! This is impressive because newborn kits cost about 2 1/2 times more than a hygiene kit! Thanks so much Jake!

Serving With Smiles is a non-profit 501c3 organization committed to teaching and inspiring children hard work, compassion, leadership and service.

Serving With Smiles is a service organization that allows children ages 6 and up to participate in humanitarian projects one Saturday each month. Our projects last one hour, but you would not believe the work these kids crank out! On average, in one hour we complete 2 quilts, 2 blankets, 2 book bags, 15 bead geckos, 25 bead bracelets, 1 hat loom, 2 ABC coloring books, 2 pictures books, 1 baby rattle AND 75 - 100 humanitarian kits (hygiene, school or newborn). Whew! It may not seem like much, but over the last 4 1/2 years we have distrubuted over 4,000 humanitarian kits and items to places like: Arizona Indian Reservation, Togo, Malawi, Mali, Guatamala, El Salvador, Haiti, Domincan Republic, Nicaragua, New Mexico, Iraq, Afghanistan, Salt Lake City, South Africa and here in American Fork. http://servingwithsmiles.blogspot.com/2008/08/our-current-efforts.html. We have an average of 75 kids that come each month and have over 450 kids on our role. An exciting new occurence is the Saratoga Springs Serving With Smiles branch that began just two years ago and is going strong plus a "newborn" Pleasant Grove Serving With Smiles that will begin this next August 27!

We also take the time to listen to speakers who are experts at humanitarian work. They often inspire the children of SWS with their stories of people they have helped in many parts of the world. Our favorite thing is to see pictures of recipients of our work actually holding items that we have made for them!! So cool!

Ramblings and philisophical

beliefs of SWS by Elizabeth......

It all started with a desire...

to teach our own children! 11/2007

Corinne and I (Elizabeth) decided that we wanted to teach our children to be grateful for all the bounties that we have around us. We also wanted our children to understand that the blessings that we enjoy should be shared because most of the world does not have what they need!

Our first project was split into 2 different sessions between our 2 basements. We gathered our kiddos and made 8 newborn kits. It took us several tries and tons of trips to the store and our storage rooms. I remember that Corinne was so emotional and grateful when we finished because she could see in the kids a magic that we have now become very familiar with....children LOVE to serve! Our kids were so happy about their work and they were excited to help someone in need.

After that, we took our kids to surrounding neighborhoods passing out door flyers inviting everyone to our first, official Serving With Smiles project. We spent hours and hours, along with our children preparing and planning. The anticipated day arrived on May 15, 2007. We didn't know what to expect. Would other people be attracted to our idea? Would anyone show up? Would it be a disaster? We arrived at our church building at 7:00 a.m. to get everything ready for 9:00. Can you believe it, at 9:00 40 kids showed up ready and anxious to get to work! It was amazing! First of all, people showed up. Second, we witnessed that "magic" again. The kids were happily working because they knew they were helping others in need!! What is this?

Here we are, 4 1/2 years later. We started out making 8 kits and now we have made over 4,100 kits and they have been sent to countries all over the world! Corinne and I have been through a lot together and separately. We've had many trials and many joys. We've had moves, deaths, job losses, children born, children grown and triumphs. Through it all Serving With Smiles has continued to thrive and prosper. Why? Whenever it seemed that SWS would not last because we could not see how we could pay for this or we didn't know how we could figure out that, someone always swooped in and made it work. Serving With Smiles is good. Every dime donated goes to purchasing supplies for humanitarian kits and obligations. Every minute spent is with love and concern for the children of SWS and those we serve. We feel that divine intervention has kept Serving With Smiles afloat and there is a reason for that.

We need good in the world. Good saves the world. Children, keeping their hands busy serving people they have never met is "magic" because there is power when children are so focused on loving others. Our tiny group of 5 children has now grown to over 700 children, including 2 new branches in Saratoga Springs and Pleasant Grove who serve and realize they really can make a difference. They really can change the world.

What is Serving With Smiles? It is a way for children to perform their innermost desires. Their desire is to help people in need. When they watch the news or read a newpaper article depicting suffering, their first reaction is, "Who will help them? What can I do to help them?" Serving With Smiles is the answer to their questions and you can see it in their faces.

Recent Projects

JANUARY 21, 2012
It's a new year and we decided to ask the children of SWS their opinions about how they like the way SWS is run. From the results of the questionnaire the concensus seems to be that the projects are too short, they love all the guest speakers (especially the "famous" ones) and trying some new table projects would be fun. We're always trying to make things better and worthwhile so that everyone feels like they are using their time for good and productive uses. Thanks to all the Serving With Smiles kids for your service and example! You are an inspiration.

Daniel was our "Outstanding Service Award" recipient.

He has a great ability with people at the nursing homes and can work like a horse. Thanks for your example!

DECEMBER 3, 2011
In keeping witih SWS tradition, we assembled 50 girl and 50 boy kits for the Crossroads Homeless shelter in Salt Lake City, UT. This is always a very special and fun project because although we usually give supplies to people around the world, we remember that there are also people close to home who need a leg up.

Thanks so much to Ryan Mansfield for sharing his experiences on a humanitarian trip to Africa this summer. It was very encouraging to see pictures of kids in Africa playing soccer, helping their parents and singing songs. Thank you for the reminder that we are all people trying to be happy, well and strong.

Also congrats to Abbey and Aiden for their example of helpfulness, strength and attitude! You're awesome!

All the Serving With Smiles participants were very inspired by the wise and gracious words or our dear Kate and her mom Cindy. Kate reminded us that regardless of size, age, money or power anyone can make a huge difference. Last year when Kate heard about the horrible Tsunami in Japan, she wanted to help them. She had $5 and a huge desire to make things happen. With the help of her good family they raised enough money to assemble and donate 800 hygiene kits! That is amazing! Thanks Kate and Cindy for your example and courage!

Thanks so much to Mitchell and family for giving Serving With Smiles 200 School kits!! Wow that is absolutely astounding!

We love it when soccer season comes to a close! When soccer and other sports start to slow down, then SWS has more participants! This morning was our first time starting the SWS youth before our normal 9:00 project. It was very successful because the SWS youth got busy making blankets, quilts, preemie blankets, geckos and hat looms before the project even started! So cool! At the end of the project the SWS kids had completed 2 quilts, 4 preemie blankets, 4 school bags, 20 value bracelets, 15 bead geckos, 3 hat looms, 5 picture pages and 20 ABC books. Whew! THEN, for the grand finale, in 15 minutes flat they assembled, boxed and labeled 100 school kits!!
Thank you so much to all the SWS heroes who give their time, talents and genius to make these inspiring projects a success!.....now we just need to find a place to send all our stuff:)

Super fun! I think we completed another 80 school kits!

We recalled a video that our good friend and previous SWS director, Jennie Amou-Berry showed us of her family's recent trip to her husband's homeland of Togo, Africa in 2008. This video was very inspiring with the authentic music and vivid pictures with descriptive text telling our SWS kids how much their work meant to the people in Togo. Thanks again Jennie for inspiring us so many years later

JANUARY 8, 2011.

It's a new year!! We completed 80 School kits and several other completed projects. Our guest speakers were....ourselves. Elizabeth & Corinne showed the children of SWS some of the highlights from 2010. Let's take a look! *January 23, 2010 was a project dedicated to helping the victims of the Jan. 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti. We supplemented the hygiene kits with peanut butter and water packets. We also heard from our friends the Arringtons who adopted their 2 children from Haiti. *May 12, 2010 was our very special 3 year annviersary project that we did with our Saratoga Springs compatriots. We were honored to hear LDS vocal artist Jenny Phillips sing to us and tell about her experiences in Africa. We also completed our 3,000th kit!! *December 2010 was very rewarding when we received a thank you letter from the Crossroads homeless shelter in SLC telling us that every single child received a Christmas gift because of our work!! So cool!

Christmas project was another special treat because we have made it a tradition to supply Christmas kits to Salt Lake City homeless shelters. Over the last 2 years we have donated our Christmas supplies to The Crossroads Shelter. This year Serving With Smiles gave them kits complete with items specifically for girls, boys, moms, babies and men. We completed 50 boy kits, 50 girl kits, 20 mom kits, 50 dad kits, 13 blanket kits and 12 baby kits. So awesome!!

It was marvelous success with tons of enthusiasm! We were honored to listen to LDS artist Liz Lemon Swindle tell about her work in Africa. The children especially loved hearing about Kennedy, the little boy depicted in her famous picture of the Savior holding a small african boy. Thanks Liz! Thanks to the recent award recipients for their wonderful example and hard work. You are awesome! Thanks also to the local primary class who donated money to SWS from their recent bake sale!

AMAZING! This was a project to be remembered! First of all, we were so grateful to have the Saratoga Springs branch team up with us and be our guests. Because there were so many people, we moved to a larger Stake building and were glad we did! We normally hold our projects from 9 - 10 but decided to exted this project until 10:30, which in the end we were wrapping things up at 11!

and are dedicated to service! Here are the leaders of tomorrow!

The project started out much the same as usual except we have about 8 more project tables available for the kids to choose from. We enjoyed seeing some of the variations that the Saratoga Springs branch were doing at their projects. Some of the exciting things that we did differently was the newborn kits and 3 quilt frames AND this was a lofty goal, but thanks to the amazing Suzanne and family and all the donations we received....we completed 300 humanitarian kits!! We wanted to do 300 kits to declare our 3,000 kit completion at our 3 year anniversary project. So awesome!!

One of the highlights of the morning was the privelage of listening to Jenny Phillips, LDS vocal artist, talk to the kids about her testimony of service and the work her choir has done in South Africa. She sang some very special songs that she wrote about her experiences while a slide show ran showing pics of all the wonderful children and leaders of SWS. Thanks so much Jenny!

What's a party without a raffle at the end? We handed out prizes and special take home thank you's with a seed representing the seed each SWS child has planted in their hearts for service. Saratoga Springs brought the most awesome looking (picture anyone??) cake with a SWS logo on top! Wow! What a great day!

This project was very special because just 11 days before, the terrifying earthquake in Haiti struck and you can bet that we were on the job! We weren't suprised, but very grateful for all the donations and outpouring of love that the SWS members and even non-members showed to help the people in Haiti

Quiltting is no longer a lost art at SWS! Our pros whip out 2 quilts every project! It doesn't stop there! Shauna has the kids learning sewing skills for making blankets, school bags and more!

Now it's time to talk about the events in Haiti. We listened to Corinne talk about Haiti and why we are helping them, then my husband Joel who went to Haiti in March and served the Haitian people on his LDS mission told the kids about the conditions there and why it is so important to serve people who are desperate. Then we listened to our friends Shelby and James Arrington introduce their 2 children whom they adopted from Haiti and how grateful they are for Serving With Smiles.

They must exemplify the mission of Serving With Smiles which is to work hard, have compassion, serve and be a leader. Sometimes these kids show these characteristics out in the open and sometimes, nobody knows about their service but their families in their homes. This was a very successful project! We had a record number of kids come to participate in the Christmas spirit of giving! We were also very blessed to hear from Sister Rosanne Gunther share her wisdom and spirit! This was also special because we assembled different kits than ever before. We put together Christmas kits made for Women, Boys, Girls and Babies. It was a wonderful event.

Many parents and teachers have asked about how to bring Serving With Smiles into their schools. We are excited to offer Serving With Smiles at School!

What We Do:
Provide your school with an opportunity for the student body to be involved in service/humanitarian oriented activity.
Our Vision:

We can get a lot of things done when we work together. Children can get a lot of things done when given the tools. We come with a plan and the student council (parent committee) carries it out. Your student body, teachers, and families will collect items throughout the school year that pertain to humanitarian kits. (hygiene, school or newborn kits) Example: a school kit includes pencils, notebook paper, colored pencils, eraser, scissors, and a ruler. The student council is given leadership skills by coming up with a plan to accomplish this task with help from staff members or parent helpers. All the items that are brought in to your school will then be taken to Serving With Smiles where it will be assembled by children at our projects and taken to places in need locally and throughout the world. We have watched schools grow in unity and awareness, teachers be inspired, families work together for a good cause, our precious children being taught and seeing right before our eyes…them learning the values and principles of hard work, compassion and leadership by doing.

What We Provide in the Process:

A slide show presentation that tells the story of other children less fortunate than most of us that live in our area. It also gives them a chance to “see outside the box” and hopefully give them feelings of gratitude for what they have. The hope is to also give them a desire to want to help and serve and know that they have something to offer.
Instruction to student council on how to carry out their responsibilities.

Name the schools program for their own

A skit to perform before the slide show presentation.
A collection process for the items. (Are they going to be collected in one central location, in every classroom, or in a few different places?) Also where, when, and how SWS is going to pick-up items. (PTA or other parent involvement)
A fun way to get the student body involved and motivated. (rewards, contests, etc.)
A marketing plan. How are we going to let the student body what and when we are collecting? (Announcements, posters, newsletters, flyers, etc.)

Flyers sent home monthly from SWS for an invitation to the Serving With Smiles Projects. These are typically the second Saturday of each month. Children ages 6-18 come and assemble humanitarian kits and perform other various projects such as quilting, hat looms, bead geckos, ABC books, picture books, and baby blocks.

Supplies needed:
• Pony beads. 42 of (X) color & 23 of (0) color. Colors of your choice.
• Canvas type, nylon or cotton cording, cut 45” long.
• If using nylon, melt ends with lighter and pinch before it cools.
• If using cotton, use elmer’s glue and 2 lg. eyed craft needles.
• Round toothpicks.

Instructions:
• Row 1 & 2 – Thread on 3 beads of the “X” color and affix to center. Take thread end on the right side and feed backwards through 2 end beads. This forms the nose and row 2.
• Row 3 – On left side, thread on 0X0. Then take right side and go backwards through the same three beads. Pull towards nose. Slide in a toothpick and tighten strings.
• Row 4 – On left side thread on XXX. Take right side and go backwards through the same 3 beads. Pull towards nose. Slide in toothpick and tighten strings.
• Row 5 – On left side thread on XX. Take the right side and go backwards through the same 3 beads. Pull towards nose. Slide in a toothpick & tighten strings.
• Row 6 & 7 – On the left side thread on XXX000. Take the SAME thread skip the 000’s and thread backwards through the XXX’s. Pull toward head you have made. Repeat on right side.
• Row 8, 9 , 10, 11, 12. Thread same as row 4 with the following beads in each row:
• Row 8 – X0X. Slide in toothpick and tighten strings.
• Row 9 – X00X. Slide in toothpick and tighten strings.
• Row 10 – X000X Slide in toothpick and tighten strings.
• Row 11 – X00X. Slide in toothpick and tighten strings.
• Row 12 – X0X Repeat rows 6 &7
• Row 14 XX
• Rows 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 thread just one X bead per row.

Notes:
• Before you tie off ends, tighten everything snug. Toothpicks will help enforce this.
• Tie off ends with a square knot – and-a-half (left over right, right over left, left over right again)
• Pull out toothpicks
• Put a bit of glue on knot and rub into the fibers with your fingers.
• If you use a cotton thread, put elmer’s glue on both ends of thread & rub in. This prevents fraying.

Approximate sizes:

• Crib 45 x 60 Inches
• Twin 72 x 90 Inches
• Full 90 x 90 Inches

Supplies needed:

• Fabric. Cotton, cotton-poly blend or flannel (pre-shrunk). Only purchase tightly woven fabric. Sometimes stores will have sales on loosely woven flannel, but these do not wash well, so please don’t use this. Denim and corduroy are not recommended because they are heavy and slow to dry.
• Batting - 8 oz. bonded poly batting.
• Yarn - 3 or 4 ply acrylic or acrylic wool blends or heavy Cro-sheen. One average size skein will usually tie 3 baby quilts. Do not buy the sports yarn, baby yarn, silky or shiny yarns since they don’t wash well. “Chunky” yarns are difficult for children to use. Usually the regular, cheaper yarns work the best.
• Quilt Frame and 4 clamps.
• Large quilting tacks to secure quilt on the frame.
• Scissors for trimming yarn.
• Quilting needles - Larger eyes and sharper tips. Do not buy darning needles.
• Needle threader - Use solid metal kind.

Instructions for tied quilt:

• “Pillow case method” is the easiest. With right sides together, lay top and bottom of quilt on flat surface. Lay batting on top. PIN (don’t get lazy) & sew 3 sides plus ½ of 4th side. Turn right side out & fold in and mend open space. Top-stitch around all 4 sides. Sew another row 1” from the edges to secure batting. This is so easy, because once you are finished with this, all you have to do is tie the quilt!
• Mark fabric with chalk to indicate where ties will be made. Keep about 4" apart.
*Secure quilt to frame.
• Thread yarn through needle until needle is in the middle, leaving 2 equal lengths of yarn.
• Start with Square knot for first mark. Leave a 3 – 4 inch “tail”.
• Continue in a line or grid pattern using a “down, then up” pattern, leaving only a ½” to ¼” (the smaller the better) stitch underneath.
• Tie a square knot by placing yarn in a large “C” shape above the line of yarn of the previous tie and then taking needle UNDER that line of yarn and tighten. Then, place yarn in a large “C” the opposite way, on lower side of line and pulling the needle from top, go under line of yarn and tighten. This should make a nice knot. Tighten and ensure that there are no knots underneath.
• As each grid or line is complete, trim yarn to 3 – 4” and roll quilt in to allow reaching the insides of the quilt.
• When quilt is tied, you are finished!

Approximate costs are: $4.00-$8.00 per baby quilt, depending on fabric. Wal-Mart sells quilt size batting for over $5. If you live in the Utah area, you can use a 40% coupon on Two for Tuesdays day at Roberts and pay only $3.57 for 2 crib sized batting packs! OR if you use a 40% coupon at Joanne's, get an entire roll of batting to make 6 crib sized quilts and the price is reduced to under $2 per quilt! Yarn = $2.87 per skein (Makes about 3 baby quilts). Thread = $2.00 per spool (Makes several quilts). Needles = $1.69 per package. Needle threaders = $1.69.

As always, remember that quality is more important than quantity! Thank you for helping in humanitarian work for people you will never meet. Your kindness touches hearts for good!

Items needed:
• 2 – 16 x 20 hand towels
• 2 combs (preferably with no sharp ends)
• 4 toothbrushes
• 1 toothpaste
• 2 bars of soap
• 1 gallon-sized zip-lock bag
• 1 label/tag identifying the assembly team. For example, we have a tag that we insert in bag that says, “Made with love from the children of Serving With Smiles in American Fork, Utah, United States of America”

How to assemble properly:

1. Place 2 towels together laid out flat.
2. Fold towels widthwise in half, so it is long and narrow.
3. Now fold lengthwise in thirds and place inside gallon ziplock bag. This creates a pocket in the towels to place the rest of the items. You want to keep items protected so they don’t puncture the plastic bag.
4. Place 2 bars of soap on one side of pocket, on top of another, and next toothbrushes, toothpaste & combs (upright).
5. Put the label on the outside of the pocket so it is visible.
6. Forcing the air out of the bag is harder than it seems. First, hold the bag against your body as you force the air out and keep it tight while you seal the bag. Next, make sure to keep it in a flattened, tight situation or the air will creap back in making the bag susceptible to being punctured or popped. We try to do a marathon run of “stuffing” the kits into boxes as fast as possible and then immediately sealing the boxes so the bags can’t inflate. Make sure to immediately label number of kits inside box.

Supplies needed:
• 8 x 11 ½” white cardstock paper
• Plenty of magazines to choose pictures from. Try magazines that specialize in pictures of “things” not “people”. Some options are the National Geographic, Better Homes & Gardens and school magazines, etc..
• Good Scissors
• Acid-free glue sticks
• Acid-free sheet protectors
• Yarn
• Gallon ziplock baggies

Instructions:

• Carefully choose pictures according to subject matter such as: spring, fall, summer, winter, mountains, forests, swamps, water, fishing , swimming, beaches, tropics, ocean, deserts, prairies/plains, jungles, farms, gardens, plants, harvesting, the body showing 5 senses, school, studying, learning, reading (child’s level), “let’s pretend”, space, domesticated animals, music, dance, etc...
• Animal pages need to be calming and interesting, not scary or strange. No animals killing or being killed.
• Include pictures of people (especially children) being active in any of the above recommendations.
• DO NOT USE PICTURES OF HOLIDAYS, FLAGS, POP CULTURE, WESTERN CULTURE THEMES, RELIGIOUS THEMES, MILITARY, SCARY ANIMALS, MATERIALISTIC THEMES, MOVIE STARS, MODELS, CELEBRITIES, SPORT CARS OR COMMERCIALS.
• Remember these will be for children, so make it conducive to learning, enjoyment, beauty and imagination!
• Keep to ONE subject per page!
• NEATLY cut out pictures according to category and place each category in a gallon-sized, ziplock baggie so they are ready for pasting
• Glue stick pictures on ONE side of cardstock. Fill page, overlapping pictures when needed, but make it very pleasing to the eye, neat and meticulous.
• When dry, place 2 pages, back to back in sheet protector.
• Each book is made of about 40 pages/20 sheet protectors.
• Securely tie 3 pieces of yarn into 3 holes of sheet protectors and you are finished!

Supplies Needed:
• 4 unsharpened pencils
• 1 box sharpened or unsharpened colored pencils (approximately 7” long, at least 12 pencils per box).
• 1 pair blunt nosed scissors (metal blades).
• 1 pencil sharpener.
• 1 rubber pencil eraser (appr. 1” x 2”).
• 1 straight edge ruler – 12”, with metric.
• Glued or spiral bound notebooks/pads to total appr. 450 sheets (please do not include more than 6 notebooks/pads)/ Sheet size 8 ½ x 11”, 8” x 10 ½”, 8 ½” x 11 ¾” .
• 1 durable cloth bag made of heavy fabric. (Sewing instructions are available). About 14” x 18”. Handles should be 24” x 3 ½” long or use 1 ½” webbing.
• 1 - 1 ½ gallon ziplock baggie.
• Small card identifying the creator of the kits. We make a label that says, “Made with love from the children of Serving With Smiles, in American Fork, UT, USA”

Instructions:
• If you have spiral notebooks, make sure to place them inside school bag, along with everything else. The spiral notebooks will tear the plastic of the ziplock baggie.
• Neatly arrange supplies with notebooks together and smaller items in front, inside school bag and then place inside baggie.
• Place card on outside, so it can be seen.
• Hold bag against your body and securely SQUEEZE air out of bag and seal thoroughly.
• It is very important to not let air seep back into the bag, so you must put finished kit into a tight space. We always fill completed kits into a small box with other completed kits IMMEDIATELY and then seal/tape the box promptly.
• The bags really do inflate very quickly and if they aren’t promptly packed tightly, they will inflate, which could cause the contents to get wet or pop.
• Label box with amount of kits and type of kits inside.

• 1 ½ gallon ziplock baggies
• Infant gown made from lightweight 100% cotton or knit. NO OTHER FABRIC WILL WORK! Sizes newborn – 6 months. Open gown with no zippers or buttons. Follow Available pattern if needed.
• 1 double receiving blanket made from cotton flannel or lightweight fleece. Or 1 sided medium fleece. 36” x 45”. For double sided, sew 10” square in center to keep secure.
• 4 diaper pins (not safety pins)
• 4 diaper cloths. Flat fold made of birdseye or diaper flannel (100% cotton) about 25”
• 2 bars of non-allergenic or Ivory soap
• 1 pair baby booties or newborn socks
• Small card that states who kit was made by. We put a tag that says, “Made with love from the children of Serving With Smiles in American Fork, Utah, USA”

Instructions:
• Fold blanket, infant gown, diapers into rectangular shape to fit inside baggie
• Place pins, booties, soap and card inside, so card is seen from outside
• Hold bag against your body and securely SQUEEZE air out of bag and seal thoroughly.

Supplies needed:

13 copied, white, cardstock papers
Medium sized, crayola type markers
Colored pencils
7 Plastic sheet protectors per book
Yarn to tie sheet protectors together.

Instructions:

Copy the number of book pages you would like to accomplish. Make sure the copies are nice.
NEATLY, trace outside lines of pictures with marker and fill inside with same color (see examples below).

Please ensure quality here. This activity seems very fun for little kids, but if they are not trained, they have a tendency to treat this as a normal coloring project. Remind them that it is for other children in their schools and they need to be respectful of that.
When A – Z pages are complete place pages back to back in sheet protector.
Cut 3 pieces of yarn & tie together with yarn in 3 holes of sheet protector.

Children ages 6 and older are invited to attend our monthly SERVING WITH SMILES projects which are held on a scheduled Saturday each month from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at the LDS church on 400 West 1120 North, American Fork, Utah. Please note that a new "SWS Youth" group will meet 1 hour earlier from 8 - 9:00 a.m. Youth must be 11+ years and have a basic knowledge of projects and be independent in their ability to accomplish tasks.

I was born and raised in central California. When I was 8 my mother, at the age of 28, was diagnosed with breast cancer. My dad usually worked 2 jobs and very long hours to feed our family. I do not remember ever being hungry or feeling like we had nothing, but I do remember knowing and realizing that times were tough. Our circumstances being what they were, my first memory of true compassionate service was on the receiving end.

Late one evening, there was a knock at our door about a week before Christmas. Dad opened the door, with four curious little girls trailing behind him. When we peeked outside, we saw a very large box but no visitors. It was to heavy for my dad to carry in, so we opened it on the front porch. Inside were four of the most beautiful homemade dolls I had ever seen, and one of them had my name on it. The box was filled with gifts, most of them wrapped, except for the dolls. I remember the joy I felt at this surprise. I wrapped my new doll in my arms, I loved her at first sight. I remember the tears in my parents' eyes. We placed the wrapped gifts carefully around the tree and all sat down together in the front room. My parents expressed there gratitude for the gifts and for the anonymous gift givers and encouraged us to do the same. I remember feeling like they must have been very nice people that magically knew that we had nothing for Christmas. And even as a little child, wondering who would take so much time and effort to give our family these gifts for FREE! And then knowing it had to be someone who loved and cared for us very much . . . and then wondering if they were angels.

We had more experiences like that growing up, but this particular one made a big impression on me. I wanted to do for others what had been done for me. Knowing how much these “angels” helped me and the joy they brought into my life, I knew I wanted to do that for someone else. Through the years I have gained a strong desire to serve. I have had wonderful examples through out my life that have fueled this fire within me. Loving parents, grandparents, school teachers, and church leaders have all played a role. They taught me gratitude. To look around me and see the beauty, to count my blessings, and then to quickly share them. I have learned that small things, can have a giant ripple effect and change lives. I know I am happier when I am serving others instead of being engulfed in myself or feeling sorry for myself. I believe it is the perfect cure in both of those circumstances.

In a more recent experience, I have again had the opportunity to be on the receiving end, that has inspired one of our projects at Serving With Smiles. In March of this year, I delivered a still born baby girl. Amiss all the many other emotions and feelings I do remember having some anxiety about what we would bury our little girl in and what would we even hold her with, since we brought no baby blankets with us to the hospital. The situation was all so sudden and we had no time to plan. As soon as she came, the nurse handed me a precious tiny pink blanket and a small little wrap for her tiny body. Where had these items come from? Again I thought…..was it angels? Yes it was and the angels can be any one of us if we choose. Someone had taken a little piece of their time, made those blankets for someone else like me who needed them, and donated them to the hospital. This experience opened my eyes even more to the way I wanted to live my life. We now teach children ages 10 and up at Serving with Smiles to sew preemie and stillborn blankets to donate to hospitals locally and around the world.

I love to serve. I do it as much as I can, and I try to teach my four beautiful children as much as I can. No matter where I live there are always people in need. I feel a responsibility to do my best, to seek them out near and far, that my family and I and this rising generation might be angels to them.

I learned at a young age how important it is for a child to gain self-worth and confidence from serving others. I remember my parents encouraging me to help after group efforts and secretly taking money to needy families. I also learned from my Grandma how to constantly incorporate service into our daily lives. She was always making quilts for people, making treats for people, giving money to the needy, writing kind letters of encouragement and strongly urging her family members to work hard serving others and giving our lives for good, not selfishness. This example has been deeply imprinted in the fiber of my soul and I am eternally grateful for parents and grandparents who taught me this valuable jewel of lesson: If you want to be happy, immerse yourself in the service of your fellow beings and your God.

When I was in high school, I worked as a life guard at the old Saratoga Springs Water Park in Saratoga Springs, UT. One day, patrolling the warm spring waters, I noticed a family with 2 little girls who had physical abnormalities that I couldn't identify. I started talking to the grandfather of these little girls about them. He told me that both sisters, Jessica and Amber had a rare kind of Leukemia called "aplastic anemia" and what rare odds that both sisters were infected with this horrible disease! He also mentioned that the monetary cost to treat these angels was astronomical and their parents just did not have the funds to pay for all the medical bills. My heart ached for this adorable little family. Right on the spot, I told the Grandpa that my friends and I would figure out a way to help them. I implored the help of a show choir that I was a member of at Lehi High School in Lehi, UT. Our instructor and all choir members agreed to put on a benefit concert to raise money for these precious girls. We put on the benefit concert and our choir, for the first time performed not for personal glory, but for the benefit of these girls. I saw how united people become when they leave their own personal agendas and reach out to someone else in need. I learned that a spirit of generosity and love can change hearts and reach beyond bounds of logic. Our little choir raised $1,000 for this family. This was just a drop in the bucket, but it was done with love and sincere service. This experience changed my life!

I went on to Ricks College after I graduated Lehi High School. At the end of my Freshman year, I became the President of a service club on campus called "Serving With Smiles". Our club was quite successful and once again I learned and witnessed how hearts changed and reached out beyond their own personal agendas to help someone else who had a greater or different need. When I was pregnant with our 5th child, I was challenged to figure out what my personal mission in life was. Well, being tired and unable to think beyond taking daily naps and making sure my children were fed, I couldn't imagine that there was much that I could offer society. Besides raising a family, what unique gifts did I have or what unique experiences had I been given that would help our society and neighbors. I honestly could not answer this challenge. I did not know. I kept trying to think of job skills or displayed talents. I came up with nothing. Then my husband asked me, "what just makes you excited and happy? What have you been good at before that has blessed the lives of others?" I thought of my life experiences with service and I knew that Service was the gift that I wanted to share with my children, our society and the world.

I feel so blessed to be a part of Serving with Smiles! I love working with Corinne! We are a great team and I couldn't ask for a better partner! I am especially grateful to work with all the directors who have, like a magnet been attracted to SWS because of their similar life stories and desires for their families. I'm grateful for my husband, Joel and my children for passionately involving themselves. This organization is a light in so much darkness because children are learning valuable lessons of service, hard work, compassion and leadership! These children are already sharing this light with others in their families and with their friends. We have had children report that for their birthday parties, they asked their friends to not bring presents, but bring money to donate towards assembling humanitarian kits and other projects!! That is the coolest thing ever! I love the children of SWS immensely and I feel honored to work along side them!

I've been looking for awhile for something that my children could do to serve others. I want them to understand how incredibly blessed they are to live in this country and have what they have. I want them to learn compassion for others. I want them to have a desire to serve, to share what they have with others who don't have as much or who are having a hard time. I want them to want to lift others up.

Most of the other service/humanitarian organizations are geared for adults and young adults. These are all wonderful, and allow a lot of people to serve others and bless the lives of so many. But, what really drew me to Serving with Smiles is that it is for children! Finally, an organization specifically designed to help children learn to serve, and learn how to love serving from the time they are very young. My children have learned more about the world and the people around the world. They are starting to gain an appreciation for their blessings, and want to bless others' lives.

Thank you Corinne and Liz for putting your whole hearts and souls into this and giving our children such a wonderful organization that lifts them up and helps them to lift others up, all while helping them to strengthen their testimonies of our Savior and His wonderful life of service. I am the mother of 6 children. The oldest is 23 and the youngest is 8. When my older children were quite young I was moved by a particular scripture. "But ye will teach [your children] to walk in the ways of truth and soberness; ye will teach them to love one another, and to serve one another." I wanted my children to learn to serve each other and those around them, and to find joy in serving. My children and I started doing a monthly service project and the goal was to always perform the act of service in secret. We called our our little group "The Secret Service". But, despite my worthy desire, the hectic pace of life got in the way, and after several months, our little service group fizzled out. I felt bad. I felt strongly about heeding the counsel I'd read in the scriptures, but frequently felt overwhelmed, and was unsure of where to have them go or what to have them do to offer service.

So when the flyer for an upcoming Serving With Smiles project came to our house I was desirous to look into it. My children and I have been coming to the monthly projects for over a year now, and it has truly been an answer to prayer because the projects are planned out and organized for us. My children look forward to coming each month, and I have the great satisfaction of knowing they are learning to love and serve one another; serving and giving to others who have so much less than they.

I am so grateful to Elizabeth and Corinne who not only had the vision and desire to teach their children the value of service, but also the courage and tenacity to continue on with that vision and allow others to join them in their mission to help children save the world.

Now that I really am a mother, I think about what example I want my boys imitate. They, of course, don’t grab up dolls to model what I am doing, and so I wanted to find a way to help them want to help others and to be aware that people around them may have less than they do – and to know that they can do something about that. When I heard about the start up of Serving with Smiles, I knew in some small way I wanted to be involved. I wanted my boys to not only see me serving, but to also go out and serve. I didn’t know how I was going to be involved when I went to the first project. However, history repeated itself as the example of my mom came into play. I saw a table filled with magazines for picture books and no one quite knowing how to put the books together. Not many months before I had seen my mom put those same books together at her house – so once again, because of her, I knew what to do! And so I became the picture book lady at Serving with Smiles. After over a year of doing picture books with my son by my side, he now knows how to do them and is leading out in helping others make books at the projects. I have been blessed to see the cycle repeating now with my oldest son! And so I love Serving with Smiles!

Service is something that has come naturally to me since I can remember. I think it is because of my unique family situation. I am the oldest of five children, I have a brother that is three years younger (James) and a sister that is 14 years younger than me (Annie) that both have Down Syndrome. I feel it is a privilege to be their older sister and have the many unique responsibilities that come along with being their sibling. I think that this has made me more empathic toward others in need.

Another life experience that has strengthened my desire to serve others was when I was 15 years old, my father was killed in tragic farming accident on our family farm in Cedar Valley, Utah. It was and still is a very difficult thing for my family. Annie was two years old at the time and wasn't even walking yet because of her poor muscle tone which is symptematic with Down Syndrome. My dad would carry her every where we went as a family because she was so heavy, not being able to sustain her own body weight because of poor muscle tone. After his death, my mom wondered how she would carry her on her own. I remember carrying her a lot as did my brothers (Joseph and Evan) to ease the load on my mom. I didn't really think of it as service until years later my mom now talks about how that eased her physical burden so much.

A few years later I entered the Ms. Lehi Pageant where we had to come up with a service platform. I chose something that was near and dear to my heart, which was a bereavement group for kids who had lost a parent. It felt so good inside to help others who had been through what I had been through deal with their grief. It sparked a love in me for others who had dealt with tragedy and a want to serve them.

As a young mother I have thought of different ways I could instill in my children a love to serve others. I have taken them with me to deliver meals to those who are sick or in need. We have performed many sub for Santas over the past few Christmas's and other small acts of service, but I was looking for a way to reach outside of our little town and help others who may not live here but need our help as much or more. When my dearest friends Liz and Corrine told me about this group that they organized called "Serving with Smiles" children healing the world I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get involved and help others. "Because I have been given much, I, too, must give" is a line from one of my favorite songs. I am so thankful for this opportunity to serve and to teach my children about service by giving it to those who may need it the very most.

I am a wife and mother of 3 wonderfully spirited children. I grew up in California and later moved to Utah where I graduated from Brigham Young University and BYU Law School. After a year at a "big firm" I worked with BYU's International Center for Law & Religion Studies on human rights and religious freedom issues. Later I joined a small law firm and worked part-time in the areas of adoption and estate planning. While I found these areas of my work very rewarding I chose to leave the practice of law and focus my full-time efforts on motherhood. While I still do legal work on occasion, I have spent the past several years as a homemaker and sought to find ways to continue to serve. Over the years I especially had been looking for meaningful ways to serve while including my young children also. While in law school and in legal practice, I volunteered weekly at a local soup kitchen and wanted to continue to be involved with this and other programs but it was difficult to find ways for my children to get involved in charity work since often it seemed that only teens and adults were welcome.

I joined the Serving With Smiles family in the summer of 2008 when my husband showed me an article in our local newspaper about Liz, Corinne and Serving With Smiles. My husband's comment to me was that it sounded just like what I was working on and I should get in touch with them. I did just that and boy, am I glad I did!

Shauna was born and raised in Provo, Utah. She graduated from Timpview High School and later attended Utah Valley University and Brigham Young University. She served an 18 month mission for her church to Lansing, Michigan where she saw how service can change people for the better. After having four children of her own, she felt the need for teaching them how to think beyond themselves and to serve others. Joining up with Serving With Smiles has been one way to help fulfill that need and teach the children about others in the world. Shauna resides in American Fork, Utah with her husband, Aaron and their four children.

I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, and would often sing the hymn
"Because I Have Been Given Much" in church.

Because I have been given much, I too must give;

The feelings I had as I sang this song and the example of my parents instilled a desire to serve within me. When I was a young teenager I really wanted to take horseback riding lessons. I went to great lengths to tally up how much my parents were spending on my piano lessons and music to compare with the price of riding lessons. When I presented the facts to my parents I thought that surely I could convince them to take the money for piano lessons and use it for riding lessons instead, and my dad's response really surprised me. My dad explained that by taking piano lessons I was gaining a skill that I could use to serve others for the rest of my life, in a much broader way than taking riding lessons would afford.

As the mother of four young children, I've enjoyed opportunities to do humanitarian service on occasion but have felt frustrated that they often clash with my responsibilities as a mother. Serving With Smiles is the perfect fit for me -- I get to do the service that I love, right alongside my children! I love the feeling that we have when we come home together after a morning at a SWS project, and I'm grateful to expose my children more to how blessed they are and to the responsibility that gives them to serve others around the world.

American Fork » It started with just two families gathering up soap bars, toothbrushes and combs -- the basic humanizing instruments that needy kids in Utah County or around the world might need.

Soon Corinne Allen and co-founder Elizabeth Jeffrey were passing out leaflets and drawing dozens of kids to their monthly charity sessions at a Mormon church's gym, weaving caps and beading toys and sending them around the globe. On Saturday their efforts, now embodied in a nonprofit charity called Serving with Smiles, collected about 40 children to help their global peers and to celebrate the Christmas season by giving their time and talents. Some months it's 100 or more children.

"I feel really bad that some kids don't have blankets to sleep with," fifth-grader Morynn Smith said while stitching blue yarn tassels in a baby quilt decorated with tiny handprints. "I want to help all the kids in Africa."

And help kids in Africa they do, while also packaging hygiene kids for American servicemen in Afghanistan and bead-and-pipe-cleaner Christmas ornaments for patients at Primary Children's Hospital, which they will deliver when they go caroling.

Volunteer Jenny Amou-Berry returned from Africa last week after visiting her mother-in-law in Benin and delivering care packages there and in Togo. She described families living in mud huts with palm-thatched roofs or in rows of concrete rooms that resemble American storage units. Coal for their cooking fires is in short supply, she said.

"My husband told me how they live there, but I wasn't prepared," she said.

She delivered hygiene bags, school supplies, toy lizards that the Utah children had crafted from beads, and laminated picture books made from cut-out magazine photographs. The African children ran to her wherever she was and then dashed home with the gifts, she said.

American Fork Boy Scout Taggart Befus is among the volunteers who helps set up tables and chairs for the monthly craft sessions. He said he has been inspired by photos of children receiving their gifts.

"It made me feel good that we were helping kids living in such conditions," he said Saturday while looping yarn over pegs on a plastic, hand-held loom to create a stocking cap. "They looked really happy."

That sort of awareness is part of the group's mission, co-founder Allen said.

"We want the children to know there are people who live very far away from us who can use our help, and also people who live right here in American Fork," she said.

The group asks participating children to help raise supplies from their schoolmates' families, and to donate $5 at each monthly session.

Wendy Bird from Pearls With A Purpose runs an amazing company that gives women in the Philippines work assembling jewelry that is sold here in the United States. They were able to take 70 hygiene, 70 school and several bags of clothes and diapers to be delivered that week to the Philippines.

This story is a miracle! Our wonderful Suzanne was flipping through the freecycle website and noticed a lady by the name of Shelley advertising that she and her family were traveling to South Dakota that week to help the victims of the tornadoes. She said they were in desperate need of humanitarian supplies so of course Suzanne gaver her a call. Within a few days, Shelley was at Suzanne's house and had loaded half a trailer with supplies that had been waiting for her to come get them!

When Serving With Smiles heard from a family member of Utah serviceman Kadleck that village children in Afghanistan did not have the basic hygiene items they needed, the SWS children prepared a special Christmas shipment of hygiene kits to send back with the serviceman. We hear that the children and families were very grateful for the kits they received. 12/2008

SOUTH AFRICA:

The children of Serving with Smiles assembled 50 hygiene kits and 50 school kits and donated the kits to The Jenny Phillips Choir that traveled from Utah and distributed the kits to needy school children in Africa. The look on the little boy's face as he is opening a box of crayons lovingly sent from our SWS children makes all our efforts worth it!

HAITI:

The children of Serving With Smiles colored, glued, sewed and assembled many items that were distributed to less fortunate children in Haiti. Our friend Jen Bainum took blankets and bead geckos to the orphanage where she worked to help handicapped children.

HEALING HANDS FOR HAITI:

Kathy Anderson, of Healing Hands for Haiti, told us that this little boy was elated to receive the picture book made by the Serving With Smiles children. He showed it to everyone and was eager to share it with all the other children. 10/2008

GUATAMALA & EL SALVADOR:

Kristie Rogers and her husband go around the world donating dental work humanitarian aid. She reported about their recent trip to Honduras and spoke to the children about the importance of what they were doing and promised to return pictures so the children could see the joy they would bring to other children by their acts of service and hard work. SWS gave Kristie 100 hygiene kits, 8 quilts and dozens of bracelets and geckos. We also donated 20 hygiene kits and 25 ties for their trip to El Salvador in August 2009.

IRAQ:

What a treat is was to have Roseanne Gunther come! She spoke on the importance of humanitarian work and kindness in the world. We had over 100 children attend the project. Roseanne is a pioneer in the humanitarian world and has spearheaded most of the progress that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has made regarding humanitarian work in the world. We were so blessed to be with her! She is a peacemaker and a warrior at the same time. Roseanne has been a tremendous inspiration to Corinne and Liz. 12/2007 Over the years, we have donated over 600 humanitarian kits to Roseanne to be sent to Iraq!

Many of the items that the children made this month were sent with Roseanne's organization to schoolchildren in Iraq.

ZAMBIA:

We haven't sent supplies here, but Conner Boyack was kind enough to join us! He spoke to the children about the conditions in Zambia and how the projects and kits they were doing that day would be greatly appreciated by the children in Africa. He told them that Mothers Without Borders would pass out the kits to kids that really need them. He told them how awesome it was that they were doing service for other children and how happy it made them when they got even just a tube of toothpaste.
